Holi atKhatu Shyam

‖ Phaag · flower Holi · the mela’s close ‖

Holika Dahan on Phalgun Purnima, then Dhulandi the next day — Holi at Khatu has a form all its own. Baba’s Holi is dressed in flowers, gulal and the traditional phaag songs.

Holi comes with the close of the Phalgun Mela — a meeting of two festivals. At Khatu it takes the form not so much of colour as of devotion, flowers and the songs of phaag.

Traditions

Khatu’s Distinctive Holi

  1. 1

Flower Holi — the traditional form

The most distinctive form of Holi at Khatu is the flower Holi. Petals of rose, marigold and tesu (palash) are showered at the time of darshan — a soft, fragrant experience, more devotion than colour.

  2. 2

Phaag — the traditional songs of Holi

There is a tradition of singing "phaag" in the month of Phalgun — Holi folk songs of Krishna and Shyam Baba, in Marwari and Rajasthani. During the mela, kirtan groups sing phaag through the night.

  3. 3

The overlap with the Phalgun Mela

From Phalgun Shukla Ekadashi to Holi — the whole waxing fortnight of Phalgun — Khatu is full of devotion. The mela ends with Holi, a remarkable meeting of devotion and joy.

  4. 4

    Gulal offering and Baba’s shringar

On Holi, Baba’s image is given a special shringar — pink, saffron and green cloth, garlands of flowers. Devotees offer gulal at his feet.

Before you go
  1. 1

    Use sattvic, natural gulal

Do not use synthetic or chemical colours in the temple grounds. Use only natural gulal, flower petals or haldi-kumkum — it honours the dignity of the temple.

  2. 2

From mela to Holi — plan ahead

Holi comes right after the Phalgun Mela. To take in both, arrange about a week’s stay. The crowd is comparatively lighter on Holi itself.

  3. 3

    Water and safety

Avoid water-Holi — especially for senior citizens, children and those with health concerns. Keep well hydrated and stay out of the midday sun.
