‖ Bhadrapada Krishna Ashtami · 4 September 2026 ‖

Krishna and Khatu Shyam — two forms of one consciousness. On Janmashtami the Khatu temple keeps the midnight abhishek, the jhula, the 56-bhog and night-long kirtan in a remarkable air of devotion.

Janmashtami is the festival of Krishna’s birth — and for Shyam devotees it is Baba’s birth festival too. The two are forms of one divine consciousness: one of the Dwapara age, one of Kali.

Why it matters

Why Janmashtami at Khatu?

  1. 1

Shyam and Krishna — one consciousness

At the time of the Mahabharata, Krishna gave Barbarika the boon that in the age of Kali he would be worshipped by the name "Shyam", in Krishna’s own form. By that promise, Krishna and Khatu Shyam are two forms of a single consciousness.

  2. 2

    Janmashtami — Baba’s birthday too

In the Shyam-devotee tradition, Janmashtami is celebrated as the birth festival of Shyam Baba alongside Krishna. That is why the Khatu temple keeps Janmashtami with such fervour.

  3. 3

    Bhadrapada Krishna Ashtami

Janmashtami falls on the Ashtami of the waning fortnight of Bhadrapada. It is on 4 September in 2026 and 30 August in 2027. Check a local panchang to confirm the date.

The temple programme

The Day at the Temple

  1. 1

    Mangla aarti and decoration

The festival opens with the Mangla aarti on Ashtami morning. The temple is dressed throughout in flowers, peacock feathers and bright cloth, with a special shringar before Baba’s image.

  2. 2

    Bhajan and kirtan all day

Kirtan groups sing of Krishna’s leelas through the day, with songs of "Shri Shyam Baba" and "Murli Manohar" sung especially.

  3. 3

    The jhula utsav

A beautifully decorated jhula (swing) is set in the temple courtyard, holding the child-form of Krishna. Devotees take turns at the blessing of rocking the swing.

  4. 4

    Midnight abhishek and birth aarti

At the stroke of midnight comes the moment of Krishna’s birth. The temple fills with conch and bell, and the image is bathed in the panchamrit of milk, curd, ghee, honey and sugar.

  5. 5

    The 56-bhog and prasad

After the birth, the chhappan bhog (56 dishes) is offered — makhan-mishri, peda, kheer, panjiri and Krishna’s favourite dishes — and prasad is distributed through the night.

  6. 6

    Nand Utsav the next day

The day after Janmashtami is Nand Utsav — the recollection of the joy of Krishna’s birth in Gokul, with dahi-handi, song and a festive air.
