Bhadrapada Shukla Ekadashi — the midpoint of Chaturmas, the day Lord Vishnu is said to turn onto his other side in his yoga-sleep. It is also called Parsva Ekadashi and Vamana Ekadashi.
This is the midpoint of the four-month yoga-sleep that began on Devshayani Ekadashi. Tradition holds that on this tithi Vishnu turns over as he sleeps — hence "Parivartini" (the one who turns) and "Parsva" (side). For Shyam devotees it is the marker at which the wait for Dev Uthani is half done.

The day of the turning
On Ashadha Shukla Ekadashi (Devshayani) Vishnu enters his yoga-sleep on the ocean of milk, and on Kartik Shukla Ekadashi (Dev Uthani) he wakes. This Ekadashi falls exactly between the two, and it is the day he is said to turn onto his other side — that is what gives the tithi its name.

The Vamana connection
This Ekadashi is also called Vamana Ekadashi for its link to Vishnu’s dwarf avatar — the lila in which three paces measured the three worlds and King Bali’s pride was turned into humility. Giving and surrender are the governing sentiments of the day.

Shyam Baba and Chaturmas
Shri Khatu Shyam Ji is Krishna’s form in the age of Kali, and the close of Chaturmas — Dev Uthani Ekadashi — is Baba’s own manifestation day. Parivartini is the halfway mark of that wait: half of Chaturmas gone, half remaining. From this day Shyam devotees begin turning their minds toward Baba’s Janmotsav.

Bathe at dawn on Ekadashi, remember Vishnu and Shyam Baba, and take the sankalp.

Worship the Vamana form — yellow flowers, tulsi leaves and yellow cloth are held auspicious.

Keep the fast through the day, on fruit or without food as you are able; giving grain, cloth or an umbrella is especially fruitful.

Why is Parivartini Ekadashi observed?
