Khatu ShyamChaurasi Naam
‖ The eighty-four names — each a glimpse of one quality ‖
The eighty-four names (chaurasi naam) of Khatu Shyam — each name a doorway to one quality, one form, one deed or one lineage of Baba. Remembering them places the whole glory of the deity in the heart.
Eighty-four names is a lot to keep — so why bother? Because each one fixes a single idea: a deed, a quality, a face of Baba. Reciting them in order is a way of walking through his whole story without opening a book, and name-remembrance (naam-smaran) needs no ritual, only attention.
The number eighty-four — 'chaurasi' — is a symbol of completeness. The cycle of 84 lakh life-forms (yonis) is bound to this number, and remembering the eighty-four names is held to be a gentle path toward release from that cycle.
The names are not scattered but ordered — first the deity's forms and lineage, then the valour of the three arrows, then the Mahabharata deeds and the offering of his head, then the manifestation at Khatu and his royal adornment, and finally his nature as the Hare ka Sahara. Reciting them in order walks the devotee through Baba's entire story.
How the Eighty-Four Names Are Grouped
- 1
Form & lineage
Names that recall Baba's appearance and his descent — Bhima's grandson, son of Morvi, the blue-horse rider.
- 2
The three arrows & the Mahabharata
Names marking the boon of the three arrows, his valour, and the offering of his head in the great epic.
- 3
Khatu & the refuge
Names of his manifestation at Khatu, his royal adornment, and above all the Hare ka Sahara — the refuge of the defeated.
How to Recite the Names
- 1
Sit calmly before an image of Baba after bathing and wearing clean clothes.
- 2
Recite each name in order from 1 to 84; you may prefix each with "Om" or "Jai" — e.g. "Om Shri Shyam Namah".
- 3
Recall the meaning of each name as you say it, so the remembrance is felt and not mechanical.
- 4
A weekly recitation, or one on Ekadashi and Thursday, is considered especially fruitful. Close with "Jai Shri Shyam".
